What to do if you have high cholesterol?

If you have been told by your doctor that you have high cholesterol, you are encouraged to do these things:

  • Stop smoking
  • Control your weight, keep your BMI less than 23kg/m2 but not below 18.5kg/m2
  • Exercise for 30 minutes for 5 or more days per week
  • Limit alcohol intake to a maximum of 2 (women) or 3 (men) standard drinks per day
  • Eat more wholegrain foods, vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, fish and unsaturated oils; food low in saturated fat and transfat, refined grains and cholesterol

If your cholesterol cannot be controlled by diet and physical activity, your doctor may prescribe cholesterol-lowering medication(s).

Please consult your doctor regarding the benefits and risks of cholesterol medicine. There are a lot of myths regarding statin which may not be true. Our doctors and care manager are able to create a diet and exercise plan according to your lifestyle needs.

We are here for you.
